Cognitive and neurological research

Semax

Also known as ACTH (4-10) analogue

A synthetic heptapeptide based on a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, studied for its effects on neurotrophic signalling.

What it is

Semax is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide derived from the 4-10 fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, with an additional short sequence added to improve stability. It was developed in Russia in the 1980s and is used clinically in some countries outside the United States.

What published research examines

  • Expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
  • Neuroprotection in animal models of ischaemia
  • Attention and cognitive performance measures
  • Modulation of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems

Where the research stands

Much of the Semax literature originates from Russian research groups and clinical practice, where it has a longer history of use than in the United States.
